چکیده

ADVANCED MATERIALS & PROCESSES • AUGUST 2014 18 F asteners play a critical role in engineered structures as a method of nonpermanent joining for the aerospace, infrastructure, civil, automotive, energy generation/distribution, and many other industries. Fastener failures can lead to disastrous consequences and substantial financial losses. One of the most common fastener failure modes is fatigue crack initiation and growth. Inadequate design considerations, material problems, insufficient preload, loosening, and excessive loads can all contribute to fastener fatigue.

On the origin of computational model sensitivity, error, and uncertainty in threaded fasteners

Modeling the mechanical response of components requires simplifications and idealizations that affect the fidelity of the results and introduce errors. Some errors correspond to the limited knowledge of intrinsic physical attributes while others are introduced by the modeling framework and mathematical approximations. This paper studies the dependence of the force-displacement response of threa...

Compliant Control of Threaded Fastener Insertion

Controlled compliance and accommodation matrix techniques are considered for robust insertion of threaded fasteners. Errors in translational positioning are shown to be easily corrected. Errors in the angle of tilt between the threaded parts are shown to be much more diicult to correct and constrain the region of convergence for simple linear techniques.

Electromagnetic Detection of Fatigue Cracks under Protruding Head Ferromagnetic Fasteners

The detection of fatigue cracks under installed fasteners has been a major goal of the aging aircraft NDE community. The Sliding Probe, Magneto-Optic Imager, Rotating Self-Nulling Probe, Low Frequency Eddy Current Array, and Eddyscan systems are among the instruments developed for this inspection. It has been verified that the detection of fatigue cracks under flush head aluminum and titanium f...

Anti-loosening performance of coatings on fasteners subjected to dynamic shear load

This paper investigates the self-loosening of threaded fasteners subjected to dynamic shear load. Three kinds of typical coatings, PTFE, MoS2, and TiN applied to bolts and nuts, are tested in this investigation. The study experimentally examines the loosening mechanisms of fasteners and assesses the anti-loosening performance of the three tested coatings based on their tightening characteristic...
